Serial Idler, The Lifetime Job Where You’re Paid For Doing Anything You Want

Company | Public Art Agency Sweden

Company description | Government agency whose mission is to explore and develop the interaction between contemporary art and public space through site-specific art, temporary interventions, urban development projects, symposiums, discussions and publications.

Job location | Gothenburg (Sweden)

Job description | The conceptual stunt is the brainchild of Swedish artists Simon Goldin and Jakob Senneby, who wish to challenge the dynamics of economics. The open-ended job will be handed to an individual, who will be allowed do whatever he/she wishes, as long as he clocks in and out of Korsvägen, a transportation hub in Gothenburg, Sweden at designated hours. At “work,” he’ll be able to do anything he deems fit – be it napping or binge-watching the latest shows – so long as he punches in and out at the start and end of every day. Checking in ensures that the lights of the redeveloping Korsvägen train station are switched on. The project is in response to the increasing pressures that the working class in Gothenburg faces, which sees them being pushed out of the city. With the Eternal Employment position, the artists aim to bestow complete control onto the employee, overthrowing power dynamics.

Compensation package | SEK21,600 (US$2,323) per month as per 2019’s fiscal state, though the amount will be adjusted to fit economic changes.

Application period | From March, 8 2019 to… 2026 (near to the opening of the new Korsvägen station)!
